1. Wind Ridge: Start your hike from Deadman’s Flats on the south side of Hwy.1 by 9 a.m. on hot mornings, so that you can enjoy a glorious lunch with most of the day’s elevation already under your belt. The views of Wind Valley, Wind Tower and Mt. Lougheed are awesome on the ascent. Across the ridge at the top, the Sisters boldly stare, startling in their nearness. This is a hugely rewarding, long day’s climb.
2. Saddleback/Fairview Mtn: This lovely hike starts back of the Chateau Lake Louise and climbs steeply through cool forests with views of the Bow Valley through numerous avalanche paths. Saddleback is a sub-alpine meadow with gorgeous wildflowers in summer and golden larches in fall. You will need an extra two hours at least to do the awesome scrambling to the top of Fairview. It adds an extra 1400 foot elevation gain to the almost 2000 you have already completed to Saddleback. But then, it’s outstanding!
3. Lady Macdonald Mtn: You can see Lady Mac watching over the town from your Bow Valley Motel base. Begin at the Cougar Creek trailhead and follow the trail along the northwest bank of the creek. Turn left at the cairn, just before the valley narrows. Keep right for the most direct path to the teahouse. Take lots of water as the teahouse is not in operation. Lofty views of the valley and model town spread out below you.
Bear sightings are possible on most hikes. Travel in small groups of four to six persons. Make noise well before confined areas and blind corners. Loud shouts will announce your group’s approach. You should be fit and conditioned for both distance and elevation. Check at park info centres for wildlife sightings and trail closures. Prepare for sudden weather changes and take lots of water, sun protection, climbing poles and an energy bar to see you home safely. Turn back if you’re tired; the descent is often harder on stressed muscles or ligaments.
