Easy Biking

1. Downtown Trails. The town trails start just behind the motel and follow Policeman's Creek. Accompanying dogs must be on-leash. This is a great trail for youngsters too, as you can bike as far as you want, (to the end of Canmore Golf Course and along the river bank) or turn and loop back around as early as just a few blocks away. It's flat ground the whole way.

2 . Quarry Trails. A short drive up towards the Nordic Centre, the off-leash park is a great place to bike with or without your dog (on-leash when you leave the off-leash area). The power line trail leads up to the reservoir. Follow the dyke path or lower road back into the trees, returning to the Spray Lakes Road for an easy loop.

3. Indian Flats. A short drive east along the 1A highway below the bench, Indian Flats is another accessible, easy bike route. Please note that the area is used by the Pony Club and horses are not uncommon on the trails or in the field. Bikers yield to horse riders who do not like to be surprised. Dismount and allow the animals to pass. The forested loop behind Elk Run offers great views of the Three Sisters from the flats.

Bear sightings are possible on most bike trips. Slow down when you can't see ahead. Make lots of noise approaching confined areas and well before blind corners. Prepare for sudden weather changes and take lots of water, repair kit, helmets, sun protection and an energy bar to see you home safely.

Family Biking Adventure

1. Goat Creek Trail: An all-day affair, the Goat Creek is the perfect active family adventure. A 20 km (12 miles plus) double track route gently meanders down the valley from Canmore to Banff. Pre-arrange trail-end pickup and return transport. Although the trail is long, there are numerous spots along the way that are ideal picnic stops to re-charge tired legs. Beginners' alert: steep downhill at the start plunges to the creek.
